Recently I was driving up the middle lane of Interstate 65 when a white truck flew past me in the right lane well above the speed limit. He darted in front of me and then in front of another car in the left lane. For a half second, I thought about honking my horn at the driver of the white truck. In the past, I would’ve even had some self-righteous thought about how the driver should known better. Instead, I let off the gas to make sure I was far behind the accident waiting to happen.

I thought about how sometimes we see people we love making unwise decisions and how those choices are completely out of our control. Sometimes we know that the result of those choices will be harm to themselves and maybe others. But there’s nothing we can do to prevent people from making the choices they are determined to make. It’s like we can see the wreck before it happens. We want to stop it, but all we can do is watch and wait.

The only people we have control over is ourselves. We can warn our loved ones of the possible outcomes of their poor choices. Sometimes, we have the ability to put consequences into place for broken rules or crossed boundaries. Though we’d often like to teach others a lesson or take control of the situation, mostly, we are simply responsible for finding our own peace and letting others do what they will. Ultimately, things will work out as they should.
