Toil And Trouble

What do I have to show
From a life bound by safeguards?
Nothin’ but “Toil and trouble
And a marker in the graveyard”

Am I deaf or are you mute?
The silence is crazy-making
Only the morning songs of birds
Comfort me at dawn’s daily waking

You’ve hidden yourself from my eyes
I wonder if you were ever here
I’m weary of waiting for you
Troubled times have lasted for years

What’s a holy life worth
All this living by your rules
When you’ve left me alone to drown
Sputtering and flailing like a fool?

Based on Psalm 90, The Message
